What kinds of software do Canadian life-insurance advisors actually use?
Four kinds: quoting and illustration tools that compare carrier products; needs-analysis tools that size the coverage; CRMs and practice-management platforms that organize the book; and client-engagement and compliance platforms that put working software in the client's hands and generate the sale documents. No tool on this page shows all four, so covering all four takes at least two tools — typically a quoting tool plus one platform.
- Quoting and illustration tools — the product-selection moment. LifeGuide's pitch is one-click comparison of 33 carriers and 2,000+ plans; Life Design Analysis turns illustrations into client-ready, five-policy side-by-side visual comparisons and tracks what you share. If the question is which product, these tools answer it.
- Needs-analysis tools — sizing the coverage before anyone opens a quote. LIFEPlan builds its whole product around FNA/INA/BNA modules covering death, disability, critical illness, long-term care and estate liquidity. Nearly every vendor on this page bundles some form of needs analysis — it's the one feature the field agrees on.
- CRMs and practice-management platforms — organizing the book. Laylah's pitch is automatic client-data sync from Canadian carriers and MGAs so advisors never re-enter data; BlueMind describes AI meeting notes, KYC/FNA automation and an audit-ready E&O trail. Both sell per-user plans aimed at advisors and teams.
- Client-engagement and compliance platforms — the client works in the software too, and the compliance file builds from the same data the client maintains. This is the newest and thinnest category, and it's where PlanTogether sits.
The categories blur at the edges — most vendors bundle a needs-analysis tool, and several describe some form of client portal — but no tool on this page shows all four. The two axes that split the field hardest are quoting and a client app of the client's own, and none of the five shows both a multi-carrier quoting engine and its own client mobile app.
How do these tools compare?
This comparison covers six things an advisor actually shops for: a client app clients use themselves, client budgeting and cashflow, insurance needs analysis, compliance documents, quoting and illustrations, and published pricing. Every competitor claim comes from that vendor's own public website or app-store listing, read in July 2026 — nothing is claimed beyond what the vendor publishes. Where a site doesn't show a capability, the cell says "Not shown on their site" rather than "no".
The five competitors are the tools a Canadian advisor actually meets shopping this space: two quoting-centred (LifeGuide, Life Design Analysis), two practice-management (BlueMind, Laylah), one planning-centred (LIFEPlan). All five build for the Canadian market — each site states a Canada focus and publishes its pricing (CAD where stated), and several state Canadian data residency.

Competitor details are taken from each vendor's public website and app-store listings as read in July 2026 and may have changed since. "Not shown on their site" means exactly that — not shown, not necessarily absent. PlanTogether prices are CAD in Canada and USD in the US; competitor prices are as published by the vendor. How to choose
Start from the job you're hiring the software to do. Every tool on this page is strong at the thing it's built around — so the useful question isn't which one is best, it's which bottleneck in your week costs you the most.
- You spend your day comparing products across carriers. LifeGuide is the obvious starting point — its pitch is one-click comparison of 33 carriers and 2,000+ plans, and at $30 CAD a month for the web edition it's the cheapest of the five competitor tools on this page.
- You present product comparisons to clients and want them visual. Life Design Analysis is built for exactly that: illustration imports, five-policy side-by-side comparisons, engagement stats on what you share, plus in-force policy management — a different job than lookup, priced at $105–150 CAD a month.
- Your problem is the practice, not the product. Laylah (client-data sync from Canadian carriers and MGAs, integrated FNA, a secure client portal) and BlueMind (AI meeting notes, unlimited FNAs, an audit-ready E&O trail) both sell an organized digital office, both at published per-user monthly pricing.
- You do planning work beyond insurance. LIFEPlan's FNA/INA/BNA modules cover retirement income alongside death, disability, critical illness, long-term care and estate liquidity — from a Quebec company, at the low end of the field's pricing.
- Your clients' numbers go stale between meetings, and the compliance file is the drag on every sale. That's the job PlanTogether is built for — covered in the next section.
None of these choices are exclusive. A quoting tool and a client-engagement platform don't overlap at all, and at LifeGuide's $30 a month, running both is a normal stack rather than a splurge. The pairings to avoid are the overlapping ones — two CRMs, or two needs-analysis tools producing two different figures for the same client.
Where PlanTogether fits
PlanTogether is the client-engagement and compliance row of the table: the only tool on this page whose site shows both a client budgeting app clients use themselves and named compliance-document modules. It's equally clear about the other columns — it does no quoting, no product or illustration comparison, no in-force illustrations, and no CRM pipeline. For those jobs, the tools above are the better buy.
The client side is a full budgeting app of the client's own. Clients get it at no cost on iOS and Android, in Canada and the US: a budget, Safe-to-Spend, a 12-month cashflow runway, Debt Freedom with payoff dates and an extra-payment slider, and goals — plus optional Payday Planner and Cashflow Calendar add-ons. Advisors invite each client with a personal invitation from the advisor dashboard.
The app matters because of what it feeds. The client's numbers and the advisor's plan live in one shared file: every number the client keeps fresh updates the plan the advisor built, instantly. The analysis behind a recommendation draws on data the client maintains and confirms — not a snapshot from the last annual review.
For Canadian advisors, two named compliance modules — Client-Level Compliance and Sale-Level Compliance — generate the sale document chain: advisor disclosure, privacy consent, fact find with client confirmation, needs analysis, reason-why letter, replacement paperwork including the Quebec AMF replacement notice, and the policy delivery receipt. Signed copies go on record in the client file with a dated audit trail. The compliance modules are Canada-specific; the client app works in both Canada and the US. The full compliance story — both modules and each document in the chain — is on the life insurance page.
And the honest gaps, plainly: PlanTogether does no insurance quoting, no product or illustration comparison, no in-force illustrations, and no CRM pipeline. If the job is choosing the product, LifeGuide or Life Design Analysis is the better tool. PlanTogether picks up before that moment — a needs figure built on confirmed client data — and after it, with the document chain.
Pricing is published. The SetUp plan is $0 a month with every feature, for the advisor and their first 5 clients; beyond that, Starter is $29, Planner $49 and Compliance $79 per month — CAD in Canada, USD in the US. Clients pay nothing for the app, and advisors who want to can charge their own clients for the budgeting suite and keep that revenue.
If the column your stack is missing is the client app and the compliance chain, see what advisors get with PlanTogether, or look at pricing — the SetUp plan is $0 a month, every feature, for you and your first 5 clients.
